Blue Bell Recall Craziness

With the recent Blue Bell recall craziness in the news, I thought this video was appropriate. It was for a Blue Bell commercial audition I did last year. You only got 20 seconds to say why you love Blue Bell ice cream so much. Here’s my audition tape. I didn’t get it. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting to with as off the wall as my audition was. But it was fun, nonetheless! What do you think?

CrossFitting on my new prosthetic leg cover from UNYQ

Many of you have been interested in workout content on my prosthesis so I thought I’d share some recent pics. During today’s workout you’ll see I’m sporting my brand new leg cover from UNYQ. This was my first workout wearing it and it held up perfectly.

UNYQ has dozens of AMAZING covers, or fairings, to customize that fit over your prosthesis, for both above and below knee amputees. I’m wearing the Alzette in blue and white. They keep coming out with new styles and colors it seems weekly. I LOVE the new Rivet Silver Walnut and U Walnut collection! I wish I could have a different one for each day of the week. Hopefully I can add to my collection in the near future.

Here are some pictures and a video from my workout today

I challenge you to spend time alone with yourself. It’s harder than you think

aloneWe spend so much time with other people, both in person and online. We spend so much energy trying to get people to like us. We know more about others than we know about ourselves: we study them, we want to hang out with them and be like them, we want what they have and don’t want what we have. We have invested so much time in them we don’t even know who we are.

I challenge you to spend time by yourself. Get to know the real you and forget about everyone else. And getting to know yourself isn’t always pretty. You might find things that are difficult to process. You have fears, anxieties and disappointments that you have ignored for years. This is why most people don’t want to be alone and would rather distract themselves with other people’s problems.

One of the greatest investments you can make this week is to intentionally spend time alone to work on yourself. Make this a priority and other things in your life will fall into place with ease.

The Great Leprechaun of OZ

Here’s the latest blog from my wife, Sarah over on our family’s blog at

I am going to let you in on the ‘Behind the Scenes’ making of Mabry Living’s latest YouTube video, The Great Leprechaun of OZ.  Many people asked about the makeup from our Super Bowl & Katy Perry Threaten Groundhog’s Day video, so I figured it might be interesting to share how our characters come to life.

I transform our bathroom into my makeup artist studio.  This is where I do my specialty, face paint.  One-by-one my clients come in and take a seat in the chair.  I try to work as quickly as possible because my little munchkins tend to get antsy and start to smear the paint.  Touch-ups are usually a must!

First up, Austin.  Today I will be making Austin a Scarecrow.

Larson’s next.  For this video I will be transform him into a Lion.  He look thrilled, doesn’t he?  I’m sure this will come back to haunt me when he sees a therapist as a young adult or something and says, “It all goes back to my mom.  She used to dress me up and paint my face like the lion in the Wizard of OZ.

Last but not least, the star himself.  I turned John into The Great Leprechaun of Oz, complete with orange and red eyebrows and beard.

Here’s a few of the finished products

Extreme Makeover: Mabry Edition

Here’s a little project we did at our house that should make you laugh…and wonder what the heck is wrong with me. Don’t miss the video footage at the end of this post.

I previously blogged before how I am working on finding the inner ‘Selfish Sarah’ and trying to find time to discover new ways to pamper myself. As a mom of three little kids, it is difficult to find the time to fix myself up. So, while rushing to get ready yesterday morning an insane idea popped into my head.  What if I, Selfish Sarah, had a glam squad of my own for one day to transform my tired, worn-out self into a stunning showpiece that is worthy of walking the red carpet at the Oscars. Then I saw the producers of Extreme Makeover: Mabry Edition were casting a dilapidated soccer mom to makeover. I submitted my video application and guess what? They chose ME for their next makeover!

It wouldn’t be a makeover show without a before picture, right? Well, here I am.

Jean Clint fired up The Imposteurs with a little pep rally, complete with jazz hands, spirit fingers and some spit that kept flying out of his mouth. He said the spit thing was normal and was socially acceptable in Europe.

Fashion designer for the stars, Öestin, raided my closet and hand picked this stunning ensemble. He delicately paired a long cotton maroon skirt with an American Indian-inspired beaded waist line with a silky floral dress. Then he accessorized it with a daring necklace, beaded bracelets and a precious pair of brown dangling earrings. But here’s the kicker, he topped it all off with a pair of black velvet stilettos. I mean, who knows to do that? It was a marvelous cornucopia of styles and colors that only the great Öestin could have selected just for me.

Öestin demands that his client’s nails perfectly compliment his chic ensemble. So he picked crimson red for my left hand and an authentic Santa Fe-colored turquoise for my right. Öestin is the assistant to Larsón so Larsón felt it was his duty to oversee Öestin’s craftsmanship.

Onto makeup:

Larsón said he spent years perfecting trade secrets that he chooses to share with only a select few in his inner circle. Some of his makeup artistry is even used by performers globally in Cirque Du Soliel. I could hardly wait to see how I was going to look!

My makeover culminated with Jean Clint himself designing my hair using state-of-the-art techniques only few people have the luxury of experiencing. If I recall, he used a TON of dry shampoo spray to fluff, curl, clamp and then reverse clamp my hair. A technique I wasn’t familiar with until now. With an emphatic half up disheveled up-do, my new kind of BEAUTIFUL was coming to life.

What do you think? I think he did A-M-A-zing! I can’t describe to you how radiant I feel now. This experience has taken years off my life. I can confidently look in my mirror and say, “DARN, I look GOOODD!”

Not only did I transform on the outside but the bigger transformation happened internally. I want to give a big THANK YOU to The Imposteurs for giving me the courage to proudly claim my new own kind of BEAUTIFUL. Move over Emma Stone and Reese Whitherspoon. Here I come!

Honestly, my hope is that this experience not only made you laugh but helped you remember to love who you were created to be. The lesson here is to wear your identity, your true identity, with confidence. Be your own kind of beautiful. Don’t be so concerned with what others think of you from the outside. They aren’t the ones waking up in your skin everyday. So stay true to yourself and don’t let what others say dictate how or why you live your life. You only live once so don’t waste time doing things someone else’s way.

How my leg was amputated

John Clint was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas. In 1996, he graduated high school where he was a varsity basketball player. Upon graduation, John attended Baylor University in pursuit to become a sports broadcaster. However, he found great success in a sales internship so he quickly switched his major in order to prepare for his budding career post graduation.

John Mabry accidentHis plans changed drastically when the unexpected happened. While traveling in a friends SUV, the right rear tire blew out causing the SUV to roll twelve times. John’s legs had been crushed from the impact. Those few seconds are eternally seared into John’s mind.

John said, “I literally envisioned the remaining seconds of my life as a scene from a 1920’s-style movie reel. However, instead of thinking my movie would end in true love and conquest, the reality was looking more like a conclusion of indescribable fear, terror, and pain.”

Initially, John spent a total of four weeks in the hospital, undergoing fourteen operations. The most difficult challenges resulted from a massive open wound on the outside of his right foot. Initially, a “muscle flap: procedure was performed to save his limb from being amputated. Yet because of reoccurring infections, John was given two choices: another year of surgery and therapy with no guarantee of complete recover or to amputate his right leg below the knee. “Nothing can really prepare you for the moment when you first look down and see an empty space where your leg used to be. The thing that helped me the most was being able to talk to an amputee who showed me that life does go on after amputation. I proved it to myself when I walked across the stage to receive my B.A. in Communications six weeks later.”

He married his beautiful wife, Sarah, has skydived, traveled all around the world, completed triathlons and CrossFit, and has appeared in such movies and TV shows as Superbad, NCISE.R.. JAG, and numerous commercials. He is also credited with inventing a revolutionary product for the prosthetics industry that allows thousands of amputees around the world to live healthier, more active lifestyles.

Today, John enjoys a slower pace of life helping to raise his three kids in Nashville, TN.
